"Ever surprised by the kindness of strangers!"
                                     Points2Ponder
                                                                                                       By Alan P. Scaglone
In an age when we don’t really know our neighbors…
People move in and move out—all we know is the car they drive and sometimes, the music they listen to the loudest!
But know our neighbors? Gone is the day when you trade recipes across the fence or share cook outs with your closest neighbors.
No longer do we tell our neighbors that we are going on vacation and ask them to watch our house, for fear… they just might do that!
Watch it from the inside as they or someone they know – makes off with our valuable possessions all because we let them know—“we’ll be gone for two whole weeks!”
POINTS2PONDER  Why can’t we expect our neighbors to be “neighborly”? And why… are we so surprised when—THEY ARE!!!
So, I bought this lawnmower over the weekend!
Stay with me for this one—it might take a minute.
I go to Home Depot—by myself—my wife decided that she wasn’t needed to help me pick out a new lawn mower.
It wasn’t the “picking out” that I needed help with—it was the “picking up” into the back of the van that I could have used some help with.
Am I the only one who remembers that I have a heart condition? Apparently so!
My lawn mower has seen its last day—although it IS a Sears Craftsman which should mean that it will last a lifetime.
For some people, maybe.
But, for me…once I check the spark plug, clean out the air filter, lubricate the engine motor and check for oil and gas… I have reached my height of lawn mower knowledge!
And…if it still is NOT working—time to buy a new one!
And YES—I checked to make sure it had gas—this is NOT one of THOSE stories!
And for those who know—taking it to a service center is going to cost me $100 just to have it diagnosed and who knows what it will cost to fix it?
And a new one? Only costs less than twice that—and it’s new!!
Back to the new mower—it’s a LawnBoy! Apparently, that is funny—per my son, who laughed when I told him the name! He said, “You’re kidding, right?”
I said no—it’s a Toro LawnBoy! Lime Green, I might add!
I get it home—no easy feat alone—in a minivan!
I assemble it, start it and mow the lawn!
Task accomplished! New mower checks out, lawn mowed!
Now what to do with the old mower?
I tell my wife, “I’m going to do one of my Random Acts of Kindness and just set it out in the front, by the road, so someone can come by and take it. They will fix it, use it or sell it, but it will bless them and… the old mower will be out of my yard! Kind and efficient all wrapped up in one deed!”
I set it out at the road where the garbage will be picked up.
We go to lunch—have a relaxing time reflecting on the events of the day and my kind act of “giving away” the old mower!”
On the drive home, I predict to my wife “That mower is already gone! Someone drove by and saw it and SCOOPED it up! They thought it was Christmas morning!”
I was chuckling to myself because I didn’t leave a note that said “By the way—good luck—it doesn’t work!”
But hey? It’s on the side of the road? Isn’t that assumed?
Who would leave a working lawn mower on the side of the road?
Hmmmmm?
So we turn on our road, and I can see, from where we are…it’s gone!
“I told ya! It’s gone—that mower is in somebody’s backyard as we speak!”
And I was right!
As we pulled in—it was in MY backyard!
The neighbor thought I had forgotten to put it back once I mowed my lawn!
Guess they didn’t see the NEW LIME GREEN LAWN BOY!
I didn’t have the heart to put it back out on the road—
Maybe I can turn it into a planter?
Guess the neighbor was doing their own Random Act of Kindness!
Thank you Neighbor—mighty neighborly of you!

I'm just Sayin by Alan P. Scaglione

"Joe's wife Denise-- A New Season to Serve the Lord!"

                                          I’m Just Sayin’”
                                                                 by Alan P. Scaglione
A lot can happen in three months.
It’s a whole season!
Three months ago today, my brother Joe died.
Can’t believe it’s been only 3 months
And then again…it seems like a lifetime ago.
So much has changed.
And I am watching it all change, amazed how… life goes on.
Joe’s wife, Denise…she has been a wonderful example of…
Working through the grief and moving on with life.
She started with clearing out a storage unit that my brother had kept.
I know she cleared it out because…
Somehow—there are 8 boxes full of his stuff that are now in my family room.
She then decided to go visit her family in Canada for a few weeks.
We all agreed that it would be great for her to spend time with her grandkids.
While she was there, she was offered a job at her old church.
They have a college, and she will be teaching and helping the students.
And she starts tomorrow!
So…. She had to come home, pack up the house, pack for her move…
And say “see ya’ll soon”, not goodbye, to her Florida family.
All in 3 months!
What a season it’s been—just watching it unfold for her…
Just reminds you that God knows the plan for your life, and…
Just when you think that it’s all overHe is ready to use you all over again!
And Denise will tell you “My life is all about Jesus! Whatever He wants from me!”
She is remarkable, amazing, impressive and…inspirational.
Oh, there’s not a day that she doesn’t miss her husband.
I saw this wife grieve the moment her husband left us in the hospital room.
Her tears, her words…
“No, this wasn’t supposed to happen! We’re supposed to grow old together!”
Still bring tears to my eyes—her sincere startle that he left—dedication to the end.
It was painful to watch her revolve her faith with fact- He was gone.
So difficult to let it all go—and accept the truth – God wanted Joe home.
Yet, through it all…
She has shown the resilience and restoration of resting in Her Savior’s arms.
My son was so impressed with her dedication to the Lord that he
Said she is the one person he knows who gives him the best example of true Christianity!
She has served the Lord in so many capacities.
She was a nun. Yes, that kind of nun!
She was a school teacher.
She was a school principal.
She is a preacher.
She is a terrific mom, raising her two wonderful daughters!
She is a grandmother of 7.
She is a friend to everyone she meets.
She is our family prayer warrior.
Her life exemplifies the line …
“God is not looking for your ability—just your availability!”
And she has made herself available to her Savior for whatever He wants of her.
In every capacity, Denise shows God’s grace, love, forgiveness and acceptance.
Her heart loves sincerely, completely and consistently.
She lets you know…she is praying for you, and you know…she really is!
And it is inspiring!
I know she inspires my son—that’s no easy feat.
When I reflect on Denise’s One Unexpected Event—
She never believed her husband was going to die-
She was the epitome of faith in motion-
Leading organized telephone prayer chains and daily communion-
She never gave up hope and always spoke faith believing he would be healed!
But, in the end, we accept that God had another plan for Joe
And apparently, for Denise also.
As I observe her reaction to all that has happened in this Season of Change
The scripture that comes to mind is…Matthew 22:37
Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all our soul, with all your mind!”
And if ever there is someone who exemplifies this scripture,
It’s Joe’s Widow Denise!
I can’t wait to see what God has in store for her during THIS new season!
I know one thing for sure…her students are gonna love her!
Until Next Time

"Going For Gold- Go Team USA!"

                                     Points2Ponder
                                                                                                       By Alan P. Scaglone
Oh the Olympics! How I love to watch all of the competition… and see Team USA kick some butt!
It’s just so invigorating and, I have to admit, cathartic, to see all of the Olympians competing for gold!
The stories are inspiring and motivating—not that I would or could ever participate—but to see those who do—just depicts the spirit of mankind!
We all know the Michael Phelps story—the now “most decorated Olympian” in modern history.
Seeing his mom and sisters cheer him on from the sidelines—that look of sheer pride in her son and his accomplishments!
Makes any parent proud just to watch her watch her son—even IF there’s no way that any of MY children will ever compete—I experience it through her eyes!
And it’s the true spirit of competition—not just for the money, but for the joy in knowing “I’ve done my best and I’m better than the rest!”- with gold to prove it!
POINTS2PONDER  Why is it so enjoyable to watch success come out of hard work? Why don’t we see this more often anymore? Why don’t we put in the time AND effort?
But it’s not just the stories that make the front page news that inspire me. It’s the ones that show determination, perseverance and sheer will.
For example…Oscar Pistorius!
Yeh—anyone know Oscar?
Oh you will know him as soon as I describe him—I promise you!
He’s the double amputee runner who is running on “cheetahs” – that’s what they call the metal “legs” that he uses to run with!
He is amazing! To see his determination and skill in running and sheer desire to compete, not as a “special Olympics” participant, but as a participant in this Olympics.
Truly inspiring!
Even shrouded in controversy, with those whispers that he has an unfair advantage because of the metal in his cheetahs?
Unfair advantage? Really? You want to say that?
Leave the guy alone! Let him know that you are proud of his accomplishments and throw your arm around him and just say “You did good! You did real good!”
That’s what the winner of the race Oscar competed in did—he found Oscar, who didn’t place, and he hugged him and traded labels with him- validating Oscar’s right to be there!
And then there’s my favorite—
It’s a girl weight lifter!
Anybody hear of Sarah Robles?
Probably not—not much money in endorsements for a female weightlifter!
But that doesn’t stop her or even slow her down.
Living off of a $400 stipend and the good graces of her coach Joe Micela, Sarah has competed and WON!
She is just a girl, standing in front of a guy, asking him to like her… lifting 500 pounds over her shoulders!
She is not swayed or disappointed in her struggle—it makes her more determined!
And she is getting her “moment” as we watch this girl with a deformity prove to herself AND the world that determination and “YES I CAN” attitude can go GOLD!
She is truly inspiring!
The Esprit de Corp – the spirit of the Team!
From Missy Franklin—who at 16, is delaying going professional and all of those lucrative endorsements just waiting for her…
Just because—she wants to swim in college for her school!
See? It’s not just for the money… sometimes, it’s just for the sheer joy of competing and being “part of the team!”
I just had to take a moment and spotlight some of the unsung heroes of our Summer Olympics – they inspire and impress me!
In an age where we pay athletes far too much money and pay teachers and cops too little--
These prove—hard work still pays off – GOLD!

I'm Just Sayin

"I remember Mama... on her Birthday!"
                                          I’m Just Sayin’”
                                                                 by Alan P. Scaglione
Today is my mother’s birthday.
Happy birthday, Mama.
She would have been 88 today!
If she had lived past 53—but she didn’t.
She’s been in heaven 35 years now.
I know because…I’ve been out of high school that long.
She passed away in my senior year.
Not something I wish for anyone, but… Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.
I’ve always wondered how my life would have been different IF… she had lived.
Rose Matilda Scaglione was a quiet rebel.
She rebelled against tradition by naming me.
I should have been named after her father.
Italian tradition—the passing on of the father’s names.
My oldest brother was named after our father.
My older brother was named after our father’s father.
And I … was supposed to be named after her father.
But Mama had another idea. Nope—she was through with traditions.
She decided—she was naming me after her favorite movie star actor.
ALAN LADD!
Yep—that’s why I spell it A-L-A-N !
I’ve never really liked my name, but… I know how hard my mom fought to name me!
She also had some funny ways.
She had this saying when things weren’t going her way… she would say “Aw JUNK!”
Guess it was her euphemism!
And she loved jellybeans! The licorice ones were her favorite!
Funny what you remember about someone…even when they’ve been gone 35 years!
I’ve lived two thirds of my life WITHOUT my Mother!
I hope most of you cannot say that!
I remember what she taught me:
“Life is for the Living—don’t waste it on the dead!” taught me to make the most out of the life I’ve been given.
“Family is everything—your kids come first—defend them always!” taught me to always put my family, my kids first!
Those two things have shaped my life!
That’s why I say “Make a Memory—it may need to last a lifetime!”
And the other…well, that warrants a story.
First day in first grade. Miss Cagnina decided that it was not good for me to be left handed. She and her ruler decided to put an end to that.
She hit my left hand several times with her ruler—convinced she was “helping my future” by forcing me to use my right hand!
I came home with a blistered left hand. My Mama saw it and asked what had happened. I told her. She said she going to school with me.
The next day, my Mama walked into class and told Miss Cagnina that “If God made Alan left-handed, you have no right to change that!”
Miss Cagnina responded “But he will be an outcast and will never succeed in life—being left-handed is a curse!”
My Mom retorted “You touch my son’s hand again with your ruler and you will see what a curse looks like!”
I was 6 years old, but I knew—I was proud of Mama!
And…if Miss Cagnina could see me now! Guess this outcast loser would show her what God can do with a lefty He created and blessed!
I know my Mom instilled in me to always be my best, not listen to what others thought of me and always believe in myself!
I got that from a Mom who named me by defying tradition, fighting for her right to choose and giving me HER name!
She also taught me “They are never really gone AS LONG as we always talk about them!”
Guess she is still with me—even today, when I will go to her grave and put flowers for her birthday!
The Word says “Honor your father and MOTHER that your days may be long…!” Exodus 20:12
TODAY-- Honor your parents, by sharing your memories if they are gone—and by spending some quality time with them if they are still with you!
There’s a blessing that comes from honoring our parents—we should take note of that!
I just wanted to honor my Mama by remembering her…and still missing her… 35 years later!
Until Next Time

"Your face can say a lot about your future!"

                                     Points2Ponder
                                                                                By Alan P. Scaglione

So… I found this spot… on my forehead.
Nothing, I was sure, but… It just fit all of the things it is NOT supposed to fit.
It was NOT circular; It WAS bigger than a pencil eraser; and it WAS rough to the touch.
I thought to myself “Why did I spend so much time at the beach—unprotected!!
POINTS2PONDER  Why does it seem like just when everything is falling in place…Life throws you a curve ball?
So… I did something that is uncharacteristic for me… I called a doctor and made an appointment.
“If I have something, I need to know… I need to deal with the “next steps” – whatever they may be.”
And… I told my wife.
You have to know, my wife is the world’s Great Minimizer!
She has a way to minimizing the likelihood that something is going to be tragic and life altering.
I pointed it out to her.
She inspected it.
And???? She said nothing!
That was scary.
She asked if I had called a dermatologist. I told her yes and scheduled an appointment. She was impressed.
Then she said “okay, I’m going with you!”
I think that was the scariest part—after her silence.
I decided to keep this to myself. Didn’t tell anyone. It was probably nothing. No need to alarm anyone until there’s a reason. Right?
Right!
Well…I did call my sister/cousin. She has been through melanoma and all is good with her. She said, “Probably nothing-- Just get him to do a full body check!”
The night before the appointment, around 11pm, it suddenly dawned on me. This could be the last night BEFORE what could be the NEXT chapter of my life.
I called my son.
He answered.
We talked a few minutes.
I told him.
He said “Look at what you’ve handled before and look at how you will handle whatever the doctor says—let me know. I’m here for you, pops!”
That meant a lot to me.
Went to sleep with his words in my head—“I’m here for you, pops!”
Had to work the whole day. Didn’t think about it much.
Until the last hour—then it permeated my thoughts.
I just prayed “Lord, your will be done—IF you think I can handled this, I trust in your opinion of me! Whatever comes, we will handle it together!”
We got to the appointment.
The assistant asked if I wanted a “Full body Check?”
“Full body check? But that doesn’t mean FULL body check, right?” I asked. My cousin had not elaborated.
“Yes sir, full body IS full body!”
Never thought I would be asked to disrobe at a dermatologist’s office.
When the doctor arrived, he and I agreed—no need to do a full body check! We were in agreement with that!
Man to man—he didn’t want to do it AS much as I didn’t want him to do it!
That really was a funny moment—with my wife watching us talk about it and agreeing “let’s not and say we did!”
I pointed out the list of things I wanted him to check.
Hey, if you are going in for a check-up, why not have a list?

He checked out everything, leaving the forehead for last.
Each time, he said words that really should have offended me.
Instead, I was glad to hear him say “Maturity Spot!”
Maturity Spot? In other words “You’re getting OLD!”

He then checked the spot on my forehead.
He said, “I can see why you’d be concerned—it’s all the things you don’t want it to be—but…it’s also just a Maturity Spot! I’m afraid you’re just getting old!”
I shouted “YES!! I will take OLD any day! “
Then he said, “Nothing to worry about. All of these are just signs that—no matter how you fight it, you are just getting old!”
And I said “Hey, I can live with that!
