"Going For Gold- Go Team USA!" |

Oh the Olympics! How I love to watch
all of the competition… and see Team USA kick some butt!
It’s just so invigorating and, I have
to admit, cathartic, to see all of the Olympians competing for gold!
The stories are inspiring and
motivating—not that I would or could ever participate—but to see those who
do—just depicts the spirit of mankind!
We all know the Michael Phelps story—the now “most decorated Olympian” in modern
history.
Seeing his mom and sisters cheer him
on from the sidelines—that look of sheer pride in her son and his
accomplishments!
Makes any parent proud just to watch
her watch her son—even IF there’s no way that any of MY children will ever
compete—I experience it through her eyes!
And it’s the true spirit of
competition—not just for the money, but for the joy in knowing “I’ve done my
best and I’m better than the rest!”- with gold to prove it!

Why is it so enjoyable to watch success come
out of hard work? Why don’t we see this more often anymore? Why don’t we put
in the time AND effort?
But it’s not just the stories that
make the front page news that inspire me. It’s the ones that show
determination, perseverance and sheer will.
For example…Oscar Pistorius!
Yeh—anyone know Oscar?
Oh you will know him as soon as I
describe him—I promise you!
He’s the double amputee runner who is
running on “cheetahs” – that’s what they call the metal “legs” that he uses to
run with!
He is amazing! To see his
determination and skill in running and sheer desire to compete, not as a
“special Olympics” participant, but as a participant in this Olympics.
Truly inspiring!
Even shrouded in controversy, with
those whispers that he has an unfair advantage because of the metal in his
cheetahs?
Unfair advantage? Really? You want to say
that?
Leave the guy alone! Let him know that
you are proud of his accomplishments and throw your arm around him and just say
“You did good! You did real good!”
That’s what the winner of the race
Oscar competed in did—he found Oscar, who didn’t place, and he hugged him and
traded labels with him- validating Oscar’s right to be there!
And then there’s my favorite—
It’s a girl weight lifter!
Anybody hear of Sarah Robles?
Probably not—not much money in
endorsements for a female weightlifter!
But that doesn’t stop her or even slow
her down.
Living off of a $400 stipend and the
good graces of her coach Joe Micela, Sarah has competed and WON!
She is just a girl, standing in front
of a guy, asking him to like her… lifting 500 pounds over her shoulders!
She is not swayed or disappointed in
her struggle—it makes her more determined!
And she is getting her “moment” as we
watch this girl with a deformity prove to herself AND the world that
determination and “YES I CAN” attitude can go GOLD!
She is truly inspiring!
The Esprit de Corp – the spirit of the
Team!
From Missy Franklin—who at 16, is delaying going professional and all of
those lucrative endorsements just waiting for her…
Just because—she wants to swim in
college for her school!
See? It’s not just for the money…
sometimes, it’s just for the sheer joy of competing and being “part of the
team!”
I just had to take a moment and
spotlight some of the unsung heroes of our Summer Olympics – they inspire and
impress me!
In an age where we pay athletes far too much
money and pay teachers and cops too little--
These prove—hard work still pays off – GOLD!
